Rattle Snakes in the Building!

It wan an eventful night. Maggie and the kids and I were outside this evening as usual. I had to come into the building (825) for a minute. The kids were trailing behind me and wanting to follow me because they hadn't seen me all day. I told the kids to wait outside because I would be right back. I swiped my card and opened the door to go inside when I saw a baby rattle snake slither right in along with me. It was heading down the hallway toward the apartments on the first floor. After a minute I realized that if it got to the first main door it could easily get under it and from there under any of the apartment doors on the first level. I cut it off at the pass and cornered it back against the building door entrance. Fortunately on the same door that I had it cornered against, there was a poster that reminded me to beware of snakes and had a number I could call if I found one. Unfortunately, it took the police 30 minutes to get there and another hour for animal control to show up with the proper tools to haul it away. The police officer there told me that was about the 6th snake they have had a call on this year. Usually it is about 1 per year. Another resident living in building 827 said that he sees snakes outside his apartment window nearly every morning (the back side of the building). And he has seen them by a dumpster. Apparently rattle snakes live in dens where dozens live together in a type of nest. They pump out babies until about mid-summer and there can be 20 to 30 babies at a time. They use the morning hours to sunbathe and get warm. Then they find shade to cool off and they wait until night to go hunting. I learned all of this from the animal control guy who picked up the snake. So be careful out there.

When I first got him back to the door, he was going crazy, trying to escape.

He went back and forth.

And forth and back.

Eventually he curled up in this position and stayed there shaking his tail at us. Because he was so young his rattle didn't make a sound.

Goodness! I am glad we were out of town. Thanks for keeping it from going down the hall and under our door or the Takemori's! This will be the only time I will ever say this but I hope it gets cold soon!
